IRS Oversight Board Requests Spending Boost

July 7, 2009

The IRS Oversight Board sent its report to Congress yesterday asking for an additional $363 million for the IRS.

That's on top of the $12.1 billion the Obama administration requested in its fiscal 2010 budget for the IRS, according to, which was $523.4 million more than it got in fiscal 2009. The extra money should toward improving the IRS's old computer systems and laptops and to fund taxpayer service programs, said the board.

The board, which is an independent panel, may not see its request met, though, since the money would have to come out of other programs within the $24.2 billion cap set for financial services in the budget. Still, major credits should go to the board for trying to get extra money to improve the IRS's technology.
