A new poll shows that most Americans don't want state or federal tax agencies to prepare their taxes.

The poll, of 800 registered voters, found that 74 percent believe the federal government should not spend taxpayer dollars on tax preparation software when taxpayers in lower tax brackets, as well as students and veterans, can access private tax preparation software for free through the Free File Alliance program. The survey was sponsored by a technology trade group, the Information Technology & Innovation Foundation, and conducted by the Mellman Group.

The poll also found that 62 percent of taxpayers do not trust the IRS to prepare their taxes. Seventy-four percent believe it is a conflict of interest for the same government agency to be responsible for both tax collection and tax preparation.

Fifty-seven percent of taxpayers believe that if the IRS prepared their taxes, they would pay more than they really owed and that the IRS would not maximize their refunds.
