#GivingTuesday Hits New Record: Blackbaud

Nonprofit accounting and business software provider Blackbaud reported a 20 percent increase in online donations during the annual #GivingTuesday campaign, held this year on November 29.

Currently in its fifth year, #GivingTuesday represents a “global day of giving,” per the campaign’s site, and is held the Tuesday after Thanksgiving – after the giant shopping days of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Blackbaud reported more than $47.7 million in donations to over 6,700 organizations during this year’s #GivingTuesday. The company also reported the following data for 2016:

  • Donations have grown by 317 percent since the campaign’s inception in 2012.
  • Online donation volume grew by 31 percent from 2015.
  • One third more nonprofits (33 percent) received online donations than last year.
  • Average online gift amounts exceeded $126 for 2016.
  • Approximately 22 percent of online donations this year were on a mobile device.

“2016 is the biggest year yet for #GivingTuesday,” stated Steve MacLaughlin, Blackbaud’s vice president of data and analytics. “As we predicted, the movement continues to drive year-over-year growth. The positive trends displayed in our data proves the strength of the holiday’s message as more donors embrace the simplicity of using smartphone technology to contribute. About 22 percent of donations were made online and we expect that number to grow as time goes on.”
