ALABAMA

The Alabama Society of CPAs hosted more than 100 college students at its second Diversity in Accounting conference on Sept. 8, on the campus of Alabama State University. Speakers included AICPA Chair Kimberly Ellison-Taylor and New Jersey Society of CPAs CEO Ralph Thomas. (See the full story.)

CALIFORNIA

K·Coe Isom has opened a new office at 1450 Drew Avenue, Suite 200, Davis. The firm’s sixth office in California is near UC Davis, and expands its presence in the state’s central valley, which has a large concentration of the food and agriculture business the firm serves. Separately, the firm signed a marketing agreement with Farmer’s Business Network Inc., a farmer-to-farmer provider of technologies and resources to farmers. Farmer’s Business Network has appointed K·Coe Isom as its exclusive accounting and financial consulting resource in its elite partner and adviser network.

CONNECTICUT

For the fourth consecutive year, BlumShapiro, West Hartford, will serve as the founding and Diamond Sponsor of the American Manufacturing Hall of Fame Annual Induction Ceremony, which will take place on Oct. 5, 2017 at the Trumbull Marriott in Trumbull. The 2017 inductees of the American Manufacturing Hall of Fame at Housatonic Community College are: Better Packages Inc.; R.C. Bigelow Inc.; MacDermid Performance Solutions; Stanley Black & Decker; and Ulbrich Steel. In addition, the 2017 Leadership Award will be given to Jack Crane.

GEORGIA

Nichols, Cauley & Associates LLC, Atlanta, has joined global accounting association BKR International. The firm has over 100 team members in nine offices throughout Georgia, and offers a range of accounting, attest and business advisory services.

PrimeGlobal, Atlanta, announced the addition of two new firms to its Europe, Middle East & Africa Region: GC-Gestão e Consultadoria Lda, in Luanda, Angola, and Fine Accounting Services, in Nairobi, Kenya.

ILLINOIS

RSM US LLP, Chicago, has created a tax liability calculator to help business leaders understand the potential impact of tax reform on their businesses. This quick-response, online estimator addresses the primary proposed changes in both President Trump’s and the House’s tax reform proposals, helping business leaders prepare and plan for possible changes now. It will be updated as final details are known.

MINNESOTA

The Minnesota Society of CPAs announced a number of awards whose recipients will be honored Sept. 28 at the MNCPA Celebrate CPAs Awards Luncheon: Mark Sellner received the Distinguished Service Award; Zachary Ryan received the Public Service Award; Lucas Selvig received the 2017 Outstanding Young Professional of the Year Award; Nate Albrecht, Warren Bostrom, Mary Jepperson and Paul Sirek received the New Discussion Leader Award; and Stuart Bear and Sandy Neren have been named Friends of the Profession. In addition, Thomas Shroyer will receive honorary membership in the society, and a number of retired members will receive life membership: Dean Ager, John Asmussen, Stephen Bodine, William Hogle, James Lewis, Miles Locketz, Charles McElroy, Paul Seppala and Janet Vanatta.

MISSOURI

MarksNelson LLC, Kansas City, has launched an entrepreneurial services practice, using a customized blend of services and technology to offer strategy, growth and financial consulting services, and outsourced accounting and finance services to small and midsized enterprises. The services are aimed at organizations with annual revenues of $1 million to $30 million, and MarksNelson has expertise serving entrepreneurs in a wide variety of industries including professional services, technology start-ups, non-profits, construction, real estate and manufacturing.

PENNSYLVANIA

Smith Elliott Kearns & Co. LLC has been named one of the Top 250 private companies in Central Pennsylvania for 2017, ranked No. 116 by the Central Penn Business Journal, up nine spots from the 2016 ranking.

RHODE ISLAND

DiSanto, Priest & Co., Warwick, has joined global accounting association BKR International. The firm was established in 1963 and provides an array of accounting, audit, tax, management, and other professional services. It has 11 partners and a staff of 48.

UNITED KINGDOM

International firm association Morison KSi announced two new members: In Afghanistan, Lynx Eyed Chartered Accountants, operating since 2009, and in Montpellier, France, Cabinet Sartre, which was founded in 1983 and has three partners, 13 staff, and two offices.

VIRGINIA

In late July, 560 Partners and associates from all the offices across the Southeast of Cherry Bekaert LLP participated in its second annual Volunteer Week. This year’s theme was “Making a Difference in the Lives of our Youth,” and saw firm associates volunteering at Ronald McDonald Houses, Boys & Girls Clubs, Junior Achievement, United Way, and numerous local parks, schools and camps.

Associates engaged in activities such as networking with at-risk high school students, building a recreation area for a community park, painting school murals, planning and hosting sports, arts and science activities for summer camps, putting together backpacks with classroom supplies for public school students, and preparing food for at-risk kids in summer camp. Firm associates also volunteered at local shelters, soup kitchens and food banks. Activities involved collecting comfort items, school supplies and hygiene kits, crafting blankets at shelters, cleaning and prepping shelters for pet adoption, painting a shelter for women and children, filling batteries to support lymphoma and leukemia awareness events, preparing and packaging food for in-need families, and preparing meals for families of hospitalized children.
