Baker Tilly Virchow Krause, Chicago, was named a 2017 Best Adoption-Friendly Workplace by the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, which annually announces America’s top 100 adoption-friendly employers from its annual survey of U.S. employers. Rankings are determined by an analysis of a company’s adoption benefits, including the maximum amount of financial reimbursement and paid leave for families who adopt.

Plante Moran, Southfield, Mich., opened an office in Tokyo, to be led by Eigo Yamamoto, principal in the firm’s management consulting practice, and supported by the firm’s Japanese business services team. NEW YORK

Freed Maxick, Buffalo, will be one of four founding sponsors for the new Western New York Business Hall of Fame, presented by Buffalo Business First, and to be housed in the Buffalo History Museum, to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of Western New York and have established a legacy of lasting value. The unveiling of the Hall of Fame exhibit and awards ceremony will be held on November 13 at the Buffalo History Museum.

The theater, entertainment and the arts services group at WithumSmith+Brown, New York, hosted its first industry education and networking event for more than 100 participants at Sardi’s restaurant, where the firm’s thought leaders spoke about cyber and information security, sports organizations, foreign partnerships and international business tax.

The American Institute of CPAs named 27 recipients of the 2017-18 Fellowship for Minority Doctoral Students, awarding a total of $318,000. The annual program was created to increase the number of minority CPA teachers. (Read the full story.)
