Scott Hoppe was installed as the 2021-22 president of the CalCPA Education Foundation, Burlingame, during the CalCPA council meeting and education foundation annual meeting of the members in Anaheim.

Armanino, San Ramon, announced the opening of two new offices in Austin, Texas, and Chicago. Armanino initially expanded to Texas in combining with public accounting firm Travis Wolff in 2017, which established the firm’s Dallas office. Meanwhile, the firm’s Chicago office was established to support its growth with a downtown presence in one of the nation’s major business centers.

ILLINOIS

Grant Thornton
Grant Thornton, Chicago, announced the opening of a new Orlando office, the Grant Thornton Center of Excellence, which will initially create 60 professional positions. In its initial phase, the office will support the firm’s national indirect tax practice by focusing on sales/use and property tax compliance and consulting services. In other firm news, Grant Thornton announced the hiring of a record 87 new partners, principals and managing directors. The full list is available here.

John Cremins was named managing partner at Friedman + Huey, Homewood, succeeding Elliott Friedman, a founding member of the firm. Cemins, partner-in-charge of firmwide staffing and resource allocation, joined the firm in 2007.

Dave Kautter rejoined RSM, Chicago, as the firm’s federal specialty tax leader.

NEW JERSEY

Laurie Burney, associate professor of accounting and holder of the J.E. Bush Professorship in Accounting at Baylor University, was named professor-in-residence at the Institute of Management Accountantsfor a three-year term beginning Sept. 1.

Berdon, New York, partnered with the NY Mets and nonprofit Learn Fresh to offer New York City middle school students a summer education program, Math Hits, focused on STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) and social-emotional learning. Berdon will be the sole corporate sponsor of the program, which incorporates a fantasy baseball tournament with math principles to enhance students’ math skills.

Lisa Flemen was promoted to principal, and Aaron Bethmann, Candice Chau, Ryan Glasco, Agnes Li, and Florence Ma were promoted to principals at Janover, New York.

EisnerAmper, New York, announced it had received an investment from private equity firm TowerBrook Capital Partners and is separating the non-attest side of the firm into an entity called Eisner Advisory Group LLC. (Read the full story.)
