Taxpayers and tax professionals are getting their returns into the Internal Revenue Service earlier this year according to the latest government statistics, even though tax season started seven days later than last year, on Jan. 29, 2024.

While nominally the number of returns received as of March 8, 2024 (the latest available figures), is down from last year by -1.1% (63,442,000 in 2023 versus 62,761,000 in 2024), the lower number of actual filing days (47 versus 40) shows an impressive effort to get returns in the system sooner rather than later.

In turn, the IRS has already processed 61,877,000 returns and issued 43,020,000 refunds, with a total amount refunded of $135.281 billion.
