Business taxes have an important effect on the decisions companies make over key strategies, such as hiring more employees or investing in new technology, and more paid in taxes means less profit.
The states in this ranking were rated on five taxes that impact businesses: corporate income, sales, property, unemployment insurance and individual income taxes. Each state was assigned a ranking relative to all 50 states per tax and an overall ranking was determined.
The lowest-ranked states have property and unemployment insurance taxes like every other state, but the significant difference is that these states also have complex, nonneutral taxes with comparatively high rates.
Scroll through to see which states are in the bottom 20 and how they fare relative to each other for these five taxes.
