D.C. to Offer Amnesty to 42,000 Taxpayers

The District of Columbia plans to launch a tax amnesty program on Thursday in an effort to collect $170 million in known receivables owed by more than 42,000 individuals and businesses.

The district said it will outline the details of the program, eligibility and application process at its Office of Tax and Revenue on Thursday.

The district is not the only place offering tax amnesty this year in an effort to collect revenue voluntarily from delinquent taxpayers. The state of Pennsylvania offered a tax amnesty program until June 18 this year (see Pennsylvania Declares Tax Amnesty). Florida, Nevada and New Mexico are also offering tax amnesty programs until Sept. 30.

The District of Columbia reportedly expects to earn an estimated $20 million in revenue from the tax amnesty and has already included the money in its fiscal 2010 budget.
