Accounting and Related Firms Rate Among the Best Places to Work

New York (Dec. 30, 2003) -- Two accounting firms and five accounting-related service providers rank among the top places to work in the country, according to Fortune Magazine’s 100 Best Companies to Work For list.

Southfield, Mich.-based regional accounting powerhouse Plante & Moran and Big Four firm Ernst & Young ranked 18th and 97th respectively among the 100 companies. This marks the sixth consecutive year both firms made the Fortune list. Last year Plante & Moran earned the No. 11 spot, while Ernst & Young appeared at No. 68.

To be eligible for the Fortune recognition, applicant companies must have at least 500 employees and be in business for at least 10 years. Two-thirds of the ranking is based on randomly selected employee responses to the Great Place to Work Trust Index, a survey instrument that measures the quality of workplace culture.

Other companies that made the 2004 list included Microsoft (No. 25), which produces accounting and business application software; American Express (No. 36), parent firm of American Express Tax & Business Services; QuickBooks maker Intuit (No. 78); payroll and human resources outsourcer Paychex (No. 93); and financial services firm Principal Financial Group (No. 95). A profile of all of the companies recognized with the Fortune 100 award will be featured in the magazine's Jan. 12 issue and online at www.fortune.com.
