The Tommy and Victoria Baker School of Business at The Citadel military college in South Carolina has announced a new accounting program, upgrading the field of study from a concentration to an academic major at the college, starting this fall.
The transition comes 25 years after accounting acted simply as a concentration at the school, with another three years of being a "professional pathway," which looks to give students specific opportunities to their long-term career goals.
“It is our hope that this change formalizes the rich accounting curriculum we already have in place in the Baker School of Business,” stated Liz Washington Arnold, associate professor of accounting and the Citadel's accounting program director. “We want potential employers of our students to be clear about the courses of study our graduates completed and the high-quality accounting training they received.”
The new Bachelor’s of Science in Accounting will include courses on intermediate and advanced financial accounting, commercial law and auditing, and assurance services. Completion of the course will also properly prepare students for the CPA Exam in South Carolina and other states.
The Citadel reports that approximately 90 percent of students who completed the previous accounting pathway program have gone on to be hired for various positions within public accounting firms, industry, and government over the last five years, including EY, Dixon Hughes Goodman, and Google.
