CalCPA Offering Financial Counseling to Fire Victims

Redwood City, Calif. (Nov. 4, 2003) —Members of the California Society of CPAs  are providing free financial counseling services to victims of the fires that have raged throughout Southern California.

Fire victims can call (800) 922-5272, ext. 5115, for referral to a volunteer CPA who can assist them with filing insurance claims, filing casualty losses on their income tax returns, cash flow planning and other services.

CalCPA members will provide counseling over the phone.

But, if necessary, CPAs in the four county area affected by the fires will meet with victims.

Fire victims also can access Disaster Recovery: A Guide to Financial Issues, which the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) prepared for the American Red Cross, by going to http://www.calcpa.org and clicking "AICPA, NEFE Disaster Recovery Guide."

"I'm extremely proud of our members who have volunteered to provide these important services to fire victims," said Susan Waters, chief executive of 28,000-member CalCPA. "Many families have lost their homes and many small businesses were destroyed in this tragedy. Our CPAs can help them get back on their feet financially."
