MIAMI NAMES MCGLADREY
The city of Miami has named McGladrey & Pullen as its external auditor. The firm will audit the city's fiscal year that ended on Sept. 30, 2007. City officials reportedly awarded the engagement based on the qualifications and depth of experience of the firm's public sector practice. M&P currently provides services to more than 2,700 public sector clients in the U.S., including over 600 governmental entities.
GRANT THORNTON RESIGNS ETC
Grant Thornton has resigned as independent accountant to aircrew training systems provider Environmental Tectonics Corp. Grant said that it resigned because it could not rely on the representations of company management. The Southampton, Pa.-based company said that it has begun the search for a replacement.
BABYUNIVERSE ENGAGES E&Y
Denver-based maternity products retailer BabyUniverse has engaged Big Four firm Ernst & Young as its new auditor. In a filing, the company said that E&Y had served as independent accountant for eToys Direct Inc., which BabyUniverse acquired in October. E&Y succeeds Singer Lewak Greenbaum & Goldstein LLP.
AKORN DISMISSES BDO
Akorn Inc., a Buffalo Grove, Ill.-based pharmaceutical concern, has engaged Big Four firm Ernst & Young as its auditor, replacing BDO Seidman, which was dismissed. A federal filing gave no reason for the change in auditors. Akorn said that BDO would continue in its capacity until it completes the audit of Akorn's 2007 financials. It had no unresolved disagreement with BDO on accounting matters.
