Doeren Mayhew merges in Beene Garter

Doeren Mayhew & Co., a Top 100 Firm based in Troy, Michigan, has added Grand Rapids-based Beene Garter LLP, effective Jan. 1, 2022.

The combination will strengthen Doeren Mayhew’s audit and tax services, and build its client base in the manufacturing, wholesale and distribution, construction and nonprofit sectors.

Beene Garter dates back to 1949 and is one of West Michigan’s largest accounting firms. The deal will enable Doeren Mayhew to expand its presence to the West Michigan market.

All of Beene Garter’s 16 partners and 105 employees will become Doeren Mayhew employees. The office will operate under the name “Beene Garter, A Doeren Mayhew Firm” for a transitional period until it takes on the Doeren Mayhew name exclusively.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Doeren Mayhew ranked No. 59 on Accounting Today’s 2021 list of the Top 100 Firms. The firm earned $95 million in annual revenue last year. Beene Garter earned approximately $18 million in revenue.

Doeren has 425 employees and 69 shareholders in nine offices across Michigan, Texas, Florida, North Carolina and Europe.

“Doeren Mayhew is making strategic choices to grow in the right markets, with the right partners to fuel our ambitious five-year growth plan,” said managing shareholder and chairman Chad Anschuetz in a statement Thursday. “This acquisition does just that. Beene Garter is a perfect fit for us. The firm brings deep industry experience and technical expertise complementary to ours, along with a rich history and strong roots in the West Michigan market.”

Doeren Mayhew plans to leverage Beene Garter’s food and agribusiness know-how, and state and local tax expertise, plus its Sage Intacct, third-party retirement plan administration and payroll practices. Beene Garter clients will have access to additional services from Doeren Mayhew in areas such as investment banking, real estate advisory, cybersecurity, SOC reporting and international advisory services.

Both firms are affiliate members of the Moore Global Limited Network and have worked together previously. “We have known and respected Doeren Mayhew for many years. They are the Beene Garter of East Michigan,” said Beene Garter managing partner Thomas Rosenbach in a statement. “Decisions like this are never easy, but the common trust and respect between our firms, and our similar values and goals, makes the path much clearer.”

In November, Doeren Mayhew acquired Darlene Plumly CPAs to build its presence in Houston, Texas. In 2019, Doeren Mayhew expanded in Houston by acquiring Thrasher & Associates and Evans & Chastain.
