Feds Launch Goldman Criminal Inquiry

Two weeks after Goldman Sachs was charged by theSecurities and Exchange Commission for fraud, federal prosecutors have begun aninvestigation into the banking giant according to sources.

Prosecutors for the Southern District of New York arelooking into the possibility of lodging criminal charges against Goldman.

Goldman said it would cooperate with any informationrequests in the investigation, which is at a preliminary stage.

Goldman has denied the SEC charges where the regulatoraccused the company of defrauding investors in a mortgage product known asAbacus 2007-AC1.
