In a decision that will generate significant change in U.S. tax law, the Court struck down the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in a 5-4 ruling on June 26, saying it was unconstitutional in denying benefits and equal protection under the law to same-sex married couples. The decision opens the door for same-sex married couples to enjoy many federal tax-related benefits previously available only to married couples of the opposite sex. MICHIGAN

Plante Moran PLLC has launched a website to guide employers and healthcare providers through the intricacies of U.S. health care reform. The firm website gives employers and healthcare providers access to webinars, videos and articles focused on the implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.  The site, http://healthcarereform.plantemoran.com, also offers a downloadable “decision tree” that can help companies determine if they are considered a large employer who must comply with the regulations outlined in PPACA.

MISSOURI

BKD LLP has revealed its latest platform BKD University at its Leadership Conference held in Kansas City, Mo. BKDU, is a web-based portal that gives BKD’s client service and administrative personnel on-demand access to an expansive library of training courses related to technical skills, leadership, technology and firm wide policies. The firm’s Learning & Development Department began work on BKDU a year ago and rolled the final product out to more than 850 partners and employees attending this year’s Leadership Conference.

NEW YORK

The accounting association BKR International has increased the size of its annual international scholarship awarded to accounting students in 2013, in a program it initiated last year. This year, future accountancy practitioner winners will receive $3,000 each toward costs incurred in obtaining their professional credentials. Last year, scholarship winners received awards of $2,000 each.

NORTH CAROLINA

Dixon Hughes Goodman LLP, Charlotte, took part in the Count the Cans food drive which was held from June 14-24. This is the second year for the food drive which focuses on collecting monetary and non-perishable food donations in an effort to alleviate the suffering of the one out of every six Americans who struggle with hunger. The firm donated 559,973 pounds of food to the communities in which it serves in 11 states across the firm’s footprint. The firm brought in 35,548 cans of tuna and 20,283 jars of peanut butter, the most requested items sought during the summer months when children are not in school and do not benefit from school-provided lunches.

VIRGINIA

The Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants Educational Foundation recently selected its college scholarship recipients for the 2013–2014 academic year. The Foundation awarded $43,250 in undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and minority scholarships to 23 accounting college students across Virginia.
