FLORIDA

Students at Stetson University, DeLand, are helping prepare income tax returns for individuals and families as part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, and have so far prepared over 1,000 returns and helped clients receive over $1 million in refunds. The students have completed specialized training and passed certifying exams in order to prepare tax returns for the program, which is sponsored by the United Way of Volusia and Flagler Counties, Stetson’s Center for Community Engagement and the Accounting Department in the School of Business Administration. VITA also is a service project of Beta Alpha Psi, the honorary association for accounting, finance and information systems students.
 

ILLINOIS

RSM US LLP, Chicago, has released its first RSM US Middle Market Business Index. Developed in partnership with Moody’s Analytics, the MMBI is designed to accurately reflect business conditions in the U.S. middle market, while providing a statistically significant measure of the health and outlook for these businesses. The inaugural edition of the index puts U.S. middle-market business conditions at 116.6 in the first quarter of 2016, a 1.4 percent uptick from the fourth quarter of 2015. RSM plans to publish updated MMBI data on a quarterly basis.

[IMGCAP(1)]Ernst & Young LLP has been named Best Audit Services Firm by Alt Credit Intelligence as part of its US Fund Services Awards 2016, in recognition of the firm’s experience and breadth of offerings to managers operating in the credit space, and for having outperformed its peers over the past 12 months. … Freed Maxick CPAs has joined the campaign #HappyActs for its “March to Happiness” event, with the goal of performing happy acts throughout the month of March to help make the world a bit brighter. The firm celebrated during the week of March 14, ending on Friday, March 18, with an Ice Cream social in its offices. During the week, small acts of happiness were shared between coworkers, and then shared on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest with #HappyActs. Employees could be seen leaving handwritten notes of encouragement on each other’s desks, dropping off coffees, and leaving change in the vending machines – over 50 acts were completed throughout the week.

Cohen & Co. has been accepted as an exclusive Cleveland member of the National CPA Health Care Advisors Association, a nationwide association of CPA firms that provide specialized accounting, tax and consulting services to the health care industry.
