Caseware rolls out Excel add-on, client request AI

Audit and risk solutions platform Caseware announced new upgrades that allow users to bring the company's AI agents into Microsoft Excel as part of the most recent expansion of its Caseware Verity AI offering, first introduced in May. The company also unveiled an AI-first evolution of its Client Requests feature.

The Client Request upgrade is specialized for audit engagement management. At the center of this experience is the Caseware Verity Response Validation Agent, described as an agentic layer that lets auditors validate client submissions and decide for themselves whether to accept a submission. This is described as the first step toward fully automating the journey from client request through to a populated workpaper. Caseware is developing other tailored agents to support work across different phases of the engagement, from planning and risk assessment to evidence gathering and disclosure review.

"Every conversation we have with customers points to the same opportunity: extending that same connected intelligence across every phase of the Prepare, Plan, Evaluate and Report end-to-end assurance workflow, until the whole engagement runs this way, not just one corner of it," said David Marquis, chief executive officer at Caseware in a statement.

The Excel integration appears as a side panel alongside the spreadsheet, allowing accountants and auditors to get AI assistance without ever leaving the file they're working in. Alternatively, if the user is working in the engagement, they can also interact with Verity there and can pull content from or push content to Excel. There is no switching between applications or no copying data out to a separate chat window. This means it runs inside the Excel environment people already use daily, rather than requiring a separate application or workflow.

Users interact with Caseware Verity for Excel in plain, everyday language rather than formulas or code. A request like "pull these balances into a summary table," "format this column as currency," or "chart the year-over-year movement" is carried out directly in the live workbook. Because Verity is connected to the underlying Caseware engagement, it knows exactly which client file it's working in and draws on the real figures already in that engagement, rather than generating results based on guesswork or general assumptions.

Beyond just offering suggestions, the plugin can act directly on the spreadsheet itself by writing values, formatting cells, and adding sheets, tables and charts. However, rather than making unilateral changes, each action requires explicit sign-off before proceeding. Any change to the workbook triggers an approval prompt that shows precisely what Verity is about to do before it happens, creating a human-in-the-loop checkpoint at each step.

"Caseware Verity for Excel was built to bring the context of the engagement into Excel, and the power of Excel back into the engagement. It began as a way to automatically complete work programs firms already maintain in Excel - pulling engagement context directly into cells rather than having staff locate and key it in. From there the use cases extended in both directions: building a work program from scratch inside the spreadsheet, and pushing the resulting figures, schedules and conclusions back into the engagement file. In practice, that covers the repetitive assembly work that sits between the engagement and the workbook," said Jason Bradley, vice president of AI and methodology innovation at Caseware in an email.

Verity in Excel is delivered as a Microsoft Office add-in, via the Caseware Cloud Connector. Client Requests is available through a limited early-access program with a global group of reference customers, ahead of a broader rollout to all customers.
