VIRGINIA SOCIETY OF CPAS

The Virginia Society of CPAs, Richmond, held its fifth inauguration for Virginia's newly licensed CPAs in late September, at the Ritz-Carlton in Pentagon City. Approximately 250 people attended the special event, sponsored by Beers + Cutler, including more than 120 CPAs who were issued licenses in the commonwealth from January through June 2009. The biannual program is held in the fall and spring each year. The next CPA Inauguration will be held April 29, 2010, in Richmond.

Separately, the society's Educational Foundation announced the establishment of a new student scholarship by Murray, Jonson, White & Associates, Falls Church. The $50,000 named scholarship will be established in conjunction with the firm's 50th anniversary in 2009, and will be awarded each year to an accounting major planning to take the CPA Exam. The student must be currently enrolled in an accredited Virginia college or university and demonstrate academic excellence and financial need.

 

NORTH CAROLINA

HUGHES PITTMAN & GUPTON LLP

In September, Raleigh-based Hughes Pittman & Gupton LLP closed out its yearlong 25th anniversary celebration, which it marked with a series of community-service activities, including collecting food and supplies for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for 25 days; matching partner contributions for 25 children at the Make-A-Wish Foundation; contributing a total of 25 backpacks, Christmas stockings and toys to children at Raleigh Gardens; giving 25 hours of accounting assistance to Walk MS; and 25 employees working on a Habitat for Humanity project.

Separately, the firm was named one of the 2009 Best Places to Work by the Triangle Business Journal. It has also joined the Triangle Game Initiative as a corporate member.

 

ALABAMA

Barfield, Murphy, Shank & Smith PC, Birmingham, has been named a Top Small Workplace by The Wall Street Journal and Winning Workplaces.

 

BRAZIL

Crowe Horwath International has appointed Crowe Horwath RCS, São Paulo, its new member firm in Brazil. The firm has nine partners and more than 200 professionals.

 

CALIFORNIA

Argy, Wiltse & Robinson PC, McLean, Va., has launched a West Coast practice with the hiring of Jay Chung as an audit partner based in Orange County.

 

CHINA

Crowe Horwath International has appointed WanLongAsia CPAs Co. Ltd. as its lead member firm for China. The seventh-largest accounting firm in China, WanLongAsia had $57 million in revenues in 2008, has 40 partners in 21 offices around China, and employs 1,700 staff.

 

MARYLAND

Gross, Mendelsohn & Associates PA, Baltimore, is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its founding in October 1960 by Jerome A. Gross and Martin S. Mendelsohn. Today, the firm has 15 partners and nearly 100 total personnel, and recently named a new managing partner, David A. Goldner.

 

MICHIGAN

The Grand Rapids office of BDO Seidman LLP has launched a strategic collaboration with Fishbeck, Thompson, Carr & Huber Inc., a civil engineering, environmental, architectural/engineering and construction management firm, to help clients identify and secure the tax benefits from reducing energy consumption and adopting other sustainable business activities.

 

NEW JERSEY

GrowthForce has opened a sales office in Florham Park to service the New York Metropolitan area. Mike Cassano has joined the company to manage the new office.

 

NORTH CAROLINA

Cherry, Bekaert & Holland LLP, Raleigh, has been named one of Best Places to Work in the Research Triangle by the Triangle Business Journal for the third consecutive year. ... Dixon Hughes PLLC has been named one of the 15 largest U.S. health care management consulting firms by Modern Healthcare for the second year in a row, moving up to 14th.

 

PENNSYLVANIA

Rotz & Stonesifer PC has successfully completed its triannual independent quality review, which was conducted by Lingerman & Associates under the rules of the Pennsylvania Institute of CPAs.

 

TEXAS

PKF Texas, Houston, has received an Alfred P. Sloan Award for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility for the third year in a row.
