Washington — Following a 35-year career with the Internal Revenue Service, Robert E. Brazzil has joined the tax services practice of Deloitte & Touche as a director in the tax controversy services line and consumer business group.
Brazzil most recently served as a director of the Large and Mid-size Businesses Division at the IRS, where he oversaw pre-filing, filing and post-filing program activities in the retail, food, pharmaceutical and health care industries.
In his new role, Brazzil will focus on helping select D&T corporate clients and will assist with various phases of their audits, from pre-filing initiatives through issue resolution. He will also provide appropriate clients with advice regarding tax disclosures and tax penalties, Deloitte said.
“We’re on the cusp of seeing significant changes at the IRS. The audit world is changing dramatically and the IRS is accelerating the audit process,” said Brazzil. “Companies will need to pay special attention to the migration of the examination process as the IRS becomes much more enforcement-minded and focuses on changes to foster efficiencies.”

Brazzil was one of the chief architects of the IRS modernization effort focused on industry issues, and was involved in the design and implementation of the large and midsized businesses technical issue resolution processes, as well as the development of the IRS procedures and enforcement policies related to tax shelters.
