Denver (April 7, 2004) -- As part of plans announced earlier to consolidate its headquarters in Denver and shutter its Atlanta office by the end of this year, the Financial Planning Association is preparing to move four of its key departments from Atlanta to Denver.

The FPA said this week that its member services and chapter relations departments will transfer to Denver in June, while public relations will move in July, and the meetings department will follow in November. As part of the transition announced last November, the FPA gave its Atlanta-based staff a deadline of March 31 to decide whether or not they wanted to relocate to Denver.

A spokesperson for the association said eight of the 29 staff members from Atlanta will make the move to Denver. Among them is the FPA's director of public relations, Heather Almand, who will relocate to the Denver office by July. The FPA has 28 employees in Denver, four in Washington, and eight who work in virtual offices.

"A good number of our staff will finish their time with FPA between May and July accordingly," said Marvin Tuttle, executive director and chief executive. A handful of staff will remain in the Atlanta office through the end of December. "Each of the affected staff members has been very thoughtful about his/her decision, and we acknowledge that this decision-making process has been difficult -- and life-changing -- for all of them," Tuttle said.

When the decision was announced last year, FPA leaders said that it was partly to trim costs, but said it would also be beneficial to have most of the association's staff in one place. The FPA has maintained dual headquarters in Denver and Atlanta since it was formed by the merger of the Atlanta-based International Association for Financial Planning and the Denver-based Institute of Certified Financial Planners in 2000. The FPA will also maintain its office in Washington.
