Some 50 million taxpayers have not yet filed their tax returns.
The IRS said Friday that with the filing deadline looming on Monday for most of the U.S. (April 17 in Maine and Massachusetts), the agency expects to receive about 14.8 million individual income tax returns for the week ending April 12, most of them by e-file. The IRS expects to receive another 18.3 million returns next week.
About 153 million individual returns for the 2018 tax year are expected to be filed during 2019. By April 5, the IRS had received more than 103 million returns and issued almost 78 million tax refunds totaling $220.8 billion. The average refund to date is $2,833.
Overall this year, the IRS expects to receive about 14.6 million extension requests from taxpayers, many of them in the final days of filing season. The IRS also estimates that more than 14.6 million taxpayers will get an automatic extension this season, either by filing a form or making an electronic tax payment.
