Houston CPA Tapped as Chair of Technical Issues Committee

New York (Oct. 9, 2002) -- PCPS, the American Institute of CPAs Alliance for CPA firms, has named Houston CPA Stephen McEachern as chair of its Technical Issues Committee.

McEachern, managing shareholder of Houston-based Fitts, Roberts & Co., succeeds Candace Wright of Postlethwaite & Netterville in Baton Rouge, La. McEachern will serve as Chair until 2005.

The 14-member committee reviews pending professional accounting and auditing standards and selected standard-setting proposals in other technical areas, and lobbies for standards that meet the needs of regional and local firms with fewer than 600 professionals. McEachern has been a member of the AICPA's Auditing Standards Board, chairman of the SAS 84 Task Force of the Auditing Standards Board, and a member of several Auditing Standards Board task forces.

"In this environment, we hope to do all we can to lobby for some balance in new legislation," McEachern said. "Some current standards are working fine and don't need to be fixed." However he added, "There is a real risk that small CPA firms will be negatively affected by the cascade effect of state boards adopting measures that are unnecessarily restrictive."
