How they got there: The view from the top

Have you ever attended an event where some captain of industry was giving a keynote presentation and you thought to yourself if you could only spend some one-on-one time with them, you could discover the key drivers that made them successful?

Well, in lieu of a keynote speech, we have substituted an up-close and personal look inside four highly successful CPA firms - specifically, a granular view of the strategies, leadership and best practices employed by four members of Accounting Today's 2010 Top 100 Firms ranking.

The quartet we selected for our second annual "Inside the Top 100 Firms" represent a diversity of geographical markets, but more important, each firm has successfully deployed its own proprietary formulas for ongoing growth in an economy that over the past 18 months could be described as anything but growth-friendly.

Representing the Gulf Coast region is Postlethwaite & Netterville, now in its second year as a member of the T100 Firms roster, helped in no small part by year-over-year revenue growth of more than 9 percent. Meanwhile, The Bonadio Group stood out among many outstanding firms in the Mid-Atlantic region, spurred by a 15.8 percent spike in revenues, as well as the launch of a major growth initiative.

Denver-based Ehrhardt Keefe Steiner & Hottman, a multiple winner of regional "Best Place to Work" honors, stands poised to grow its already expansive tax practice in 2010 and represents the Mountain region.

And Eide Bailly, a long-time staple of excellence in the Midwest, beefed up its partner and staff numbers en route to a 20 percent climb in year-over-year revenues.

But we don't want to spoil the endings. You'll have to read for yourself what makes these firms exceptional amidst a legion of 96 other exceptional firms.

This year's profilees will humbly tell you they're just concentrating on what they do best. Sounds simple enough, but somehow they just keep doing it better.

Enjoy!
