In Brief: Mayer to Lead IRS CID

The head of the Internal Revenue Service's Office of Fraud/Bank Secrecy Act will now play a key role in efforts to halt tax fraud, after being named the new head of the agency's Criminal Investigation Division. In announcing Eileen Mayer's appointment, Commissioner Mark Everson called her a seasoned prosecutor who knows the criminal justice system inside and out.

As director of the fraud office, Mayer was responsible for the agency's internal fraud referral program from within the Small Business/Self-Employed Division. Her office specifically ensured that egregious cases of noncompliance uncovered by the agency's examiners were forwarded to criminal investigators.

Mayer came to the IRS in January 2006, after 19 years at the U.S. Attorney's Office in Washington.
