Informatica Adds Unstructured Data Support

Informatica, an enterprise software integration provider, at its annual user conference, announced an original equipment manufacturer agreement with San Mateo, Calif.-based Itemfield, a data transformation software developer.

Under the agreement, Informatica will embed Itemfield technology within the Informatica PowerCenter, an enterprise data integration platform, to aid companies in processing all forms of unstructured, semi-structured and structured data across an enterprise.

A May 2004 Forrester Research paper stated that 80 percent of all enterprise information exists as unstructured data -- e-mails, Word files, spreadsheets and scanned images. The information stored in an unstructured or semi-structured source often isn't included or linked to an enterprises' accounting software system, leaving much of that information ignored.

"In an era of ever-growing regulatory requirements, companies are finding it essential to gain a single view across the full spectrum of data that resides across the enterprise," said Girish Pancha, executive vice president of products at Informatica, in a statement.

By embedding Itemfield's technology within PowerCenter, PowerCenter users will have access to unstructured, semi-structured and structured data from one source.

Informatica also announced that it will resell the full-license version of Itemfield's flagship product, ContentMaster, a converter software product that converts any data into XML format - the universal format for business applications.
