Intuit to cease QuickBooks Desktop 2021 support May 31

Intuit will cease support for QuickBooks Desktop 2021 on May 31. The discontinuation includes all 2021 versions of QuickBooks Desktop Pro, QuickBooks Desktop Premier, QuickBooks Desktop for Mac and QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions v21.

Users who do not upgrade will no longer have access to live technical support and will not receive security updates. This also affects other products that integrate with it, such as QuickBooks Desktop Payroll, Payments and online bank feeds. Features affected by the change include:

  • Assisted Payroll: After May 31, 2024, QuickBooks Desktop 2021 won't automatically calculate correct payroll taxes, provide payroll forms or allow users to send their payroll data. The subscription will be deactivated and tax forms won't be filed on users' behalf. For more information, see QuickBooks Desktop Discontinuation FAQ for Payroll.
  • Basic, Standard or Enhanced Payroll: After May 31, 2024, QuickBooks Desktop 2021 won't automatically calculate correct payroll taxes or provide payroll tax forms. Users' paychecks may be inaccurate and their subscription will be deactivated.
  • Workers' Comp Payment Service: Users won't be able to process Workers' Comp Payments through QuickBooks Desktop 2021. A supported version of QuickBooks and an active Payroll subscription are required to run the payment service.
  • QuickBooks Workforce (formerly ViewMyPaycheck): Users and their employees won't have access to QuickBooks Workforce. They will be required to have an active Payroll subscription and supported version of QuickBooks to use this service.
  • Payroll: After May 31, 2024, QuickBooks Desktop 2021 won't automatically calculate correct payroll taxes or provide payroll tax forms. Users' paychecks may be inaccurate and their subscription will be deactivated.
  • Payment processing: Users will get a message that the service is no longer available. They won't be able to process credit card and check transactions through QuickBooks Desktop 2021. The message will include instructions for processing credit card and check transactions outside QuickBooks.
  • Merchant service deposit (reconciliation): After May 31, 2024, QuickBooks Desktop 2021 won't download credit card and check info in the product.
  • Recurring payments: QuickBooks Desktop 2021 won't download users' recurring payments. These transactions will continue to process. They can manage recurring payments at MerchantCenter.intuit.com.
  • eInvoice: After May 31, 2024, users won't be able to process eInvoice (email of invoice with pay link enabled) through QuickBooks Desktop 2021. They're required to have a supported version of QuickBooks and an active payments subscription to run this service.
  • Accountant Copy Transfer Service: Users won't be able to send accountant copies in QuickBooks Desktop using this service.
  • Contributed reports: Users won't be able to use this feature in QuickBooks Desktop.
  • Multicurrency/exchange rate: Users won't be able to use or turn on this feature to assign specific currency types to their profiles and accounts in QuickBooks Desktop.
  • Online banking: Users won't be able to download transactions, send online payments or send online transfers. The exact error message depends on the download method. For example, users may receive, "QuickBooks Desktop is unable to verify the Financial Institution Information for this Download." Note: Uploading transactions will also be discontinued.
  • QuickBooks Time: The use of QuickBooks Time within QuickBooks 2021 won't be available. To sync users' QuickBooks Time Data with QuickBooks, users will need to move to QuickBooks Online or use a web connector.

Other products that might be affected include:

  • QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2021;
  • QuickBooks Desktop Premier 2021 (General Business, Contractor, Manufacturing & Wholesale, Nonprofit, Professional Services, and Retail);
  • QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions 21;
  • QuickBooks Premier Accountant Edition 2021,
  • QuickBooks Enterprise Accountant 21; and
  • QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2021.

Intuit has recommended switching to QuickBooks Online instead.

While Intuit said it will provide customer support for registration and licensing of older versions of QuickBooks Desktop under the company's standard terms and conditions, if that data is available, it cannot guarantee it will be able to register, provide key codes, or offer data and password recovery for older versions of QuickBooks. The company also is not able to provide replacement CDs, disks or manuals for QuickBooks Desktop. Intuit also does not provide download files back to QuickBooks Desktop 2021.

Michigan-based accounting and advisory firm Yeo and Yeo suggested users will need to upgrade to a subscription-based Plus version before July 31, 2024. After that date, unsupported users will be unable to upgrade their current QuickBooks product. If users do not upgrade their product before July 31, 2024, only QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise or QuickBooks Online will be available for purchase.

The firm warned that, if one sees a deal for QuickBooks for a "three-year license," to be aware that all QuickBooks Desktop software is now subscription-based, and these marketing tactics are misleading.
