The Internal Revenue Service announced a series of hiring events that will take place in June and July to help fill what it described as "key seasonal roles."

The main roles the agency is looking to fill are:

  • Customer service representatives, who use software and other resources to provide tax-related assistance to taxpayers over the phone.
  • Tax examining technicians, who analyze and resolve tax processing problems, adjust taxpayer accounts, and respond to taxpayer questions about tax prep.

"These hiring events are an important step in strengthening our workforce and improving the taxpayer experience," said IRS CEO Frank Bisignano in a statement. "We are looking for individuals who want to make a meaningful impact while building a rewarding career in public service."
The positions on offer are entry level and do not require prior tax experience; the agency will provide training programs.

The event dates and locations are listed below, but the IRS recommends applying to the USAJobs announcement before attending, as agency hiring officials can make on-the-spot jobs offers to attendees who do so.

The in-person events will take place:

  • June 4-5: Philadelphia;
  • June 9: Dallas;
  • June 11: Jacksonville, Florida;
  • June 16-17: Covington, Kentucky;
  • June 22-23: Ogden, Utah;
  • June 25-26: Austin, Texas; and,
  • July 14-15: Kansas City, Missouri.

Last year, the IRS lost about 27% of its staff, according to a report from National Taxpayer Advocate Erin Collins.
