Kansas Firms Make a Deal

Snodgrass, Dunlap and Co. plans to merge its office in Iola, Kan., with Jarred, Gilmore & Philips, an accounting firm based in Chanute, Kan., on the first of the year.

"We provide the same type of accounting, auditing and income tax services," said office manager John Baker. "By joining with them, we'll be able to have a bigger staff and meet more of the needs of our clients."

Snodgrass will be contributing four CPAs and additional staff members, who will join the four CPAs and additional staff at Jarred Gilmore. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The decision was prompted by the recent loss of several shareholders of Snodgrass's Iola practice. One of them, Gary Leonard, passed away in November. Another, Dennis Edwards, recently resigned to move closer to his family. Joe Bambick of Snodgrass’s office in Fredonia, Kan., plans to run his own firm there.

“The others are getting closer to retirement and needed to get someone else on board to help out,” said Phil Jarred, president of Jarred, Gilmore & Philips. “The economies of scale are pretty close. We already had a small office in Iola, and it ended up working out well for us.”

He plans to move his Iola staff to Snodgrass’s Iola office. Jarred sees opportunity for expanding the estate planning and tax work done in Iola in the future.
