Porte Brown adds Katzenbach & Associates

Details: Porte Brown LLC has merged with Katzenbach & Associates Ltd., a Bloomingdale-based public accounting firm. Professionals at Katzenbach & Associates are operating under the Porte Brown name. Bruce Jones, managing partner of Porte Brown, believes the merger will benefit clients of both firms: "Our mutual core values, expertise, and guiding philosophies will make this an easy transition for our combined set of clients. Our success has always been attributed to our investment in people, processes and technology. Katzenbach & Associates' clients will have access to a greater pool of resources and a larger team of professionals."

 

KENTUCKY

DMLO CPAs acquires HPC

Details: DMLO CPAs has expanded its services to the medical and dental community through the acquisition of Healthcare Practice Consultants LLC.

Charles Thieman, founder and president of HPC, and five other employees will join the DMLO team, bringing the total number of employees to 91. "Teaming up with DMLO is an ideal move for HPC," Thieman said in a statement. "Together we are better positioned to meet the challenges of the ever-changing health care environment."

Steve Custer and Jeff Calderon, both directors with experience working with health care practices, head up the physician services group. Custer served as a consultant with HPC from 2009-2011 providing tax consultation.

 

MARYLAND

CBM and Drolet & Associates combine

Details: CBM has merged in Drolet & Associates PLLC. The combined firms will operate as Councilor, Buchanan & Mitchell, and will consist of nine partners and 50 professional and support staff. Patricia Drolet will join as an executive committee partner, and Holly Caporale and Matthew Johnson will join as partners.

 

MASSACHUSETTS

Gray, Gray & Gray has merged with Green & Green

Details: The accounting firms of Gray, Gray & Gray LLP based in Canton, and Green & Green LLC of Dedham, have agreed to merge. The combined firm will operate as Gray, Gray & Gray, with consolidated offices located in Canton. The staffs of both firms will be retained in the merged entity, which will employ a combined total of nearly 120 team members.

Gray, Gray & Gray was founded in Boston in 1945, and relocated its offices from Westwood to Canton earlier this year. The firm also has offices in Framingham and Boston. Green & Green was founded in 2001. Both firms provide accounting, audit, tax strategy, estate planning, and business advisory services to individual and corporate clients.

 

MICHIGAN

McCartney & Co and Maner Costerisan merge

Details: The accounting firms of McCartney & Co. PC and Maner Costerisan are in the process of merging. The combination will go into effect on Dec. 1, 2014, and McCartney & Co. will be recognized as Maner Costerisan.

 

NEVADA

Eide Bailly expands in Nevada

Details: Top 100 Firm Eide Bailly LLP has agreed to add the Reno, Nev.-based firm Kafoury, Armstrong & Co. to its roster. The deal includes 10 partners from Kafoury Armstrong and 56 staff members. The new addition gives Eide Bailly 28 offices in 12 states, and 1,547 staff members, including 225 partners.

In November, Eide Bailly tapped into Nevada with the addition of Muckel Anderson in Reno. The Kafoury Armstrong addition brings in three offices that are located in Fallon, Elko and Las Vegas. Todd Ferguson, CEO and shareholder of Kafoury Armstrong, will join Eide Bailly's tax department, where he will lead the division in Nevada.

 

NEW YORK

Bonadio Group and Testone, Marshall & Discenza merge

Details: Top 100 Firm The Bonadio Group has agreed to merge with Testone, Marshall & Discenza. "This is a very important merger for us," said Thomas Bonadio, CEO and managing partner of The Bonadio Group. "Together with TMD, we will offer more ideas and opportunities to clients, and more advancement for our people. Our firms are an excellent cultural fit, and we are aligned in our business and client-service philosophies."

Testone, Marshall & Discenza will operate under the Bonadio name. In Central New York, the combined firm will have more than 130 employees, which includes 15 partners, in its Syracuse, Utica and Geneva offices. Donald Taylor will serve as office managing partner, and later in 2015, Bonadio employees in Syracuse will move to TMD's offices at The Foundry on North Franklin Street.

 

NORTH CAROLINA

LB&A and Haynes Strand become one

Details: Matthews-based LB&A has merged with the Greensboro-based firm of Haynes Strand and Co. The new entity will take on the name LBA Haynes Strand PLLC and will continue to serve small and middle-market businesses. LBA Haynes Strand will have offices in Matthews, Greensboro, and Mount Airy. The combined firm will be led by co-managing members John Bly and Jeff Gordon and will have 65 employees, including 10 members.

 

OKLAHOMA

McGladrey bulks up, Pt. 1

Details: Top 100 Firm McGladrey LLP signed a definitive agreement to acquire considerably all of the assets of the Oklahoma City-based firm Cole + Reed. The transaction provides McGladrey with a presence in Oklahoma City, making the firm the leading provider of assurance, tax and consulting services focused on the middle market in Oklahoma. "By joining forces with Cole + Reed, McGladrey has the opportunity to more broadly serve middle-market businesses in Oklahoma," said Joe Adams, managing partner and CEO of McGladrey.

 

PENNSYLVANIA

McGladrey bulks up, Pt. 2

Details: Top 100 Firm McGladrey LLP has signed a definitive agreement to acquire substantially all the assets of the Philadelphia-based firm Fesnak LLP. Fesnak has been serving clients for more than 10 years with physical locations in Blue Bell, Pa., and New York City. The firm is made up of eight partners and 90 client service professionals who will join McGladrey, including Bob Fesnak and Lisa McLemore, who will assume roles on McGladrey's Philadelphia leadership team. They will join McGladrey's more than 250 people working in four area offices - Blue Bell, Philadelphia, and Harrisburg, Pa., and Moorestown, N.J.

 

TEXAS

BDO expands in Houston and Dallas

Details: BDO USA LLP has entered into an agreement to acquire Top 100 Firm UHY Advisor's Texas practice.

The UHY Texas practice provides a range of financial and consulting services to a diversified client base in the energy, manufacturing, distribution, professional services, health care and real estate sectors. The new addition will bolster BDO's presence in Houston and Dallas.

"We are now adding a very prominent energy sector group, with a specialty in upstream and oil field services," BDO CEO Wayne Berson said in an interview with Accounting Today. "One of the focus areas for us worldwide is in the natural resources practice. We always look at what the futurists are saying and what the GDP is in each of the major areas to see what are the other areas we really want to invest in. One of the hottest markets in the country today is certainly Houston. That's why we worked so hard to get a deal done in Houston."

 

UTAH

Gallina expands into new territory

Details: Top 100 Firm Gallina LLP of Roseville, Calif., has stepped into Utah by merging in Leverich Group. The new addition, which is based in Midvale, brings Gallina's partner group to 49 members and more than 300 staff. Leverich Group will assume the Gallina name. Leverich Group partners Joseph Leverich and Steve Scoggan will transition into Gallina's partner group. Gallina's Utah-based partner, Derek Evans, will join the team and assume the role of partner-in-charge of Utah.

 

VIRGINIA

Matthews Carter & Boyce adds Yates Klutz & Frazier

Details: Matthews Carter & Boyce has agreed to merge with Yates Klutz & Frazier. The merger has allowed Matthews Carter & Boyce to expand its team to include David Frazier as principal, Michelle Poole as senior manager, and Susan Norton as an administrative professional. The firm held a grand opening for clients to meet the new professionals on Dec. 2, 2014, at its new location in Fairfax.

 

WISCONSIN

Huberty and Biwan & Biwan to merge

Details: Huberty CPAs & Trusted Advisors has agreed to merge with Biwan & Biwan, a CPA firm based in Sheboygan. Huberty has offices in Ripon, Plymouth and Markesan. The new addition has increased the staff size to nearly 40. About half are CPAs. Company owners include CPAs Ann Freund, Gary Born, Greg Feucht and, with the latest merger, Carla Biwan Hameister.
