Ernest Gini, a founding partner of Top 100 Firm MGO, died on May 12.

He was with the California firm — previously known as Macias, Gini & O'Connell — since 1991, focusing on governmental and nonprofit accounting, with extensive experience in OMB circular A-133 single audits.

“Ernie was a fun-loving, charismatic, and sharply intelligent leader. He helped grow MGO through his brilliant technical expertise and a commitment to client service, attributes that are still deeply important to MGO to this day,” said CEO and managing partner Kevin O’Connell.

He was also an inspiration to those who knew him — not least following the 2001 car accident that left Gini, once an avid runner, a quadriplegic. Despite his injuries, and with the help of his family, he continued his work at the firm until his retirement 17 years later.

Born in Stockton, California, in 1950, Gini earned a BA in accounting from California State University - Stanislaus in 1973, and later earned an MBA from California State University - Sacramento in 2000.

A CPA, he served as a member of the California Society of CPAs Government Accounting and Auditing Committee and as the president of the Sacramento Chapter. He also served on the GASB Advisory Committee on the User Guide to Local Government Financial Statements, and was a contributor to "What You Should Know about Your Local Government’s Finances, A Guide to Financial Statements."

He is survived by his wife, Susan, and his two sons and their families.

Donations can be made in his name to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation.
