NYSSCPA CEO announces retirement

The New York State Society of CPAs announced that CEO and executive director Joanne S. Barry has informed the NYSSCPA board of directors that she will retire at the conclusion of the NYSSCPA fiscal year in May 2022.

Barry has served as CEO and executive director since January 2010 and has been with the NYSSCPA for 40 years. Barry has also served as executive director of the Foundation for Accounting Education, the Moynihan Scholarship Fund, and as treasurer of the CPA Political Action Committee, in addition to serving on a number of local and national accounting boards. Barry has also been regularly featured on Accounting Today’s Top 100 Most Influential People in Public Accounting list.

“My journey with our organization has been amazing, as I witnessed the transformation of the profession through the decades,” said Barry in a statement. “I had the privilege of working with so many CPAs who were passionate about their profession. Together, we built a powerful and well-respected organization in New York.”

“[Barry's] leadership of the Society has provided the blueprint for our continued success” said former NYSSCPA president and current CPA PAC president Scott Adair in a statement. “Joanne’s ability to make sure that our voice is heard at all levels has truly solidified our reputation as the ‘Trusted Professional.’ Whether Joanne was talking to an individual member at a chapter meeting, elected officials in Albany, other State Societies or the AICPA, she showed care and a true desire to learn and assist however our Society could.”

The NYSSCPA board of directors said it will begin its search for a new executive director with details to be announced soon. Barry will work with the newly elected individual and Society leadership through May 31, 2022.
