NJCPA awards 2022 student scholarships

The New Jersey Society of CPAs' Scholarship Fund awarded approximately $230,000 in scholarships to more than 55 local high school and college students on April 26 at the Pines Manor in Edison — its first in-person ceremony for student scholarships since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Twenty-five accounting students at New Jersey colleges or universities, currently in their junior or senior year and entering an accounting-related graduate program, were awarded $6,500 each. Eight students in their sophomore year were awarded $2,000 each, and two received $5,500 American Institute of CPAs/NJCPA Minority Scholarships. National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) - Northern New Jersey Chapter/NJCPA awards were also awarded.

“It’s always a thrill to be able to assist such young, talented individuals,” said Ralph Albert Thomas (pictured), CEO and executive director of the NJCPA, in a statement. “This would not have been possible if it wasn’t for the generosity of our members and firm/company benefactors.”

Twenty-two local high school students, who are college-bound seniors intending to major in accounting or obtain a concentration in accounting, received $1,500 each. Six of these winners were awarded the Deloitte Minority High School Scholarship, which aims to introduce more diverse students to accounting as their college major. The Deloitte scholarship winners were from three New Jersey high schools that were part of the pilot program: Rahway High School, West Orange High School and New Brunswick High School.

“It was wonderful to be able to gather in person this year to meet the students who are receiving the scholarships. The scholarships not only provide financial relief but also encourage the students to pursue a career in accounting,” said Henrietta Fuchs, president of the NJCPA Scholarship Fund and partner at CohnReznick, in a statement.
