PCAOB Appoints New Inspections Chief

The Public Company Accounting Oversight Board has named Helen A. Munter as the new director of its Division of Registration and Inspections.

In her new job, Munter will oversee the PCAOB’s largest operating division, which conducts regular periodic inspections of hundreds of registered public accounting firms located all over the world. She will be replacing George Diacont, who is retiring early next month (see PCAOB Inspection Chief Diacont to Retire). Munter comes from inside the PCAOB, having joined the board as regional director of the PCAOB’s San Mateo, Calif., office in 2004 after working for Deloitte & Touche’s San Francisco and Barcelona offices as an audit partner and deputy director of professional practice. She became a deputy director at the PCAOB in 2008.

“I am pleased that Helen has accepted this important position,” said PCAOB Chairman James R. Doty in a statement. “As director, Helen will play a crucial role in monitoring and improving the quality of audits subject to PCAOB oversight. The investing public will benefit from her deep experience in conducting inspections and her strong commitment to the PCAOB’s mission.”

Munter will assume the directorship post on March 1, when Diacont retires. “I am honored to lead the Division of Registration and Inspections,” she said. “I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with George Diacont and with such talented inspections staff in the field conducting inspections during the last seven years at the PCAOB. I look forward to working with the board and division staff in my new role as we continue our important work of protecting investors.”
