Arizona

Sandra A. Abalos, managing partner of Abalos & Associates PC, was installed as the director of national public policy of the Phoenix Metropolitan Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners at the association’s meeting at the Phoenix Country Club. The nonprofit membership organization is dedicated to promoting the growth and economic development of women business owners and, as the director of national public policy, Abalos will oversee all lobbying and public affair efforts for the organization. ... Connecticut

Kostin, Ruffkess & Co. LLC, Farmington, announced that Richard V. Kretz, managing member of the firm, was recently honored by Central Connecticut State University as the distinguished alumnus of the year. Kretz joined Kostin, Ruffkess & Co. LLC in 1981 and became a member in 1987. In 1993, Kretz was elected managing member of the firm, the youngest member ever to be voted to this position. Kretz is also one of the founders of the Leading Edge Alliance, a nationwide network of major independently owned accounting and consulting firms. He is a member of the AICPA and the CSCPA, where he is on the board of government and chair of the strategic planning committee. Also, Joseph Centofanti and Tracy A. Brouillard, both of Kostin, Ruffkess & Co. Florida

Peter Gampel has joined Madsen, Sapp, Mena, Rodriguez & Co. PA, Ft. Lauderdale, as director of the expanded litigation/valuation consulting practice. Formerly the director of Arthur Andersen’s Florida and Caribbean valuation services group for the past six years, Gampel brings more than 20 years’ experience in this specialized practice area to MSMR. Another key member of MSMR’s litigation/valuation consulting team, Steve R. Picha, recently attained the accredited in business valuation designation from the American Institute of CPAs. Fewer than 1 percent of the institute’s 337,000-plus members nationwide hold the ABV designation, which recognizes CPAs who possess highly expert technical skills and business acumen in business valuation. ... Berkowitz Dick Pollack & Brant LLP, Miami, announced that J.R. Rowena Tang has joined the firm as a staff accountant in the business advisory services department. Tang received a B.S. in accounting from Florida International University and has more than six years’ experience working in private accounting. She specializes in accounting and technology consulting and is also a member of the Florida Institute of CPAs and the United Way of Miami-Dade. Illinois

Hikaru Fujimoto, partner at Corbett, Duncan & Hubly PC, Chicago, has been selected to serve on the internal auditing standards board of The Institute of Internal Auditors for a three-year term, where he is promoting IIA-Japan and IIA-Worldwide. Fujimoto has communication skills in Japanese and English and has extensive experience working with a number of international companies doing business in foreign countries. He is the president of the CDH Corporate Risk Management Inc., Tokyo, Japan office, a wholly owned subsidiary of Corbett, Duncan & Hubly PC. Fujimoto is an active member of the AICPA, the IIA-Chicago and IIA-Japan. Laubinger has earned that designation of Certified Intuit Master Builder Professional Advisor, providing expertise and best practices standards in accounting and consulting services to the construction industry. Maryland

Wolman has been elected an officer and member of the executive committee of Jewish Family Services of Central Maryland at its 146th Annual Meeting. Jewish Family Services is an interdisciplinary, human services organization that provides family and individual support services that promote human dignity, enhance self-sufficiency and strengthen family and individual life in Central Maryland. Wolman is a member of the AICPA, the Maryland Association of CPAs and the Advisory Committee of the University of Baltimore Graduate Tax Program. He is a director at Ellin & Tucker and resides in Baltimore. ... Claudia Macelaru of Councilor, Buchanan & Mitchell PC, Bethesda, received a Master of Accountancy from The George Washington University School of Business and Public Management and received a Master of Accountancy Award. This award is given to recognize outstanding academic achievement. Macelaru came to the United States in 1999 from Romania and entered The George Washington University School of Business and Public Management in 2000. She plans to sit for the CPA exam this November. ... KAWG&F, Baltimore, announced that Stephen M. Cupit, has been re-elected treasurer of the Towson Business Association. Cupit is also a member of TBA’s board of directors. In addition, he is TBA’s representative to the Greater Towson Council of Community Associations and is a committee member of the Towsontown spring festival. Cupit is a manager with KAWG&F and has been with the firm since 1980. Also at KAWG&F, Anita M. Sheckells was elected to serve as a member of KAWG&F’s board of directors. Sheckells started with the firm in 1984 and became a shareholder in 1995. She is co-chair of the construction support services group and accounting committee and chair of the Maryland Association of CPA’s construction accounting committee.

Missouri

Mark A. Jansen has been named Small Business Accountant Advocate of the Year for the St. Louis district of the Small Business Administration. Jansen is the partner-in-charge of the Small Business Group and a member of the Contractor Services Group at Rubin, Brown, Gornstein & Co. LLP. Jansen, who started his career with RBG 20 years ago in general audit, was named partner-in-charge of the Small Business Group in 1999. He currently heads a staff of 20 accounting professionals. Since 1998, Jansen has served on the Associated General Contractors Stempel Plan Advisory Board, mentoring emerging businesses with the ultimate goal of increasing their work volume and broadening their base of activity.
