Salzberg Elected Global CEO of Deloitte

Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited has promoted the chief executive of its U.S. firm, Barry Salzberg, into the role of global CEO.

Salzberg will assume his new role and responsibilities on June 1. He will succeed James Quigley, who is completing his term and will transition into a senior client service role as a senior partner in the Deloitte U.S. firm on June 1, 2011. Salzberg's leadership appointment is part of a nomination and member firm partner ratification process that occurs every four years and includes all of the member firms in the DTTL worldwide network.

Salzberg will be succeeded as Deloitte LLP CEO by Joseph Echevarria, who is currently the U.S. managing partner and chief operating officer. The new chairman will be Punit Renjen, who is succeeding Sharon Allen.

As the new DTTL CEO, Salzberg's responsibilities will encompass working across a network of 53 member firms operating in 150 countries, with more than 170,000 people worldwide.

"I am humbled by the confidence that the network has placed in my leadership during this historic time," Salzberg said in a statement. "Over the years, I have worked closely with Jim Quigley and admired his commitment to our strong global culture and shared values, which have brought us to our preeminent position in the marketplace today. I look forward to leading DTTL, helping grow the Deloitte network's businesses, and maintaining the relentless focus on quality and client service that our member firms worldwide consistently uphold."

During his more than 30-year tenure at the Deloitte U.S. firm, Salzberg, 57, has served in a variety of leadership roles. In 2007, he was elected to his current position as CEO of Deloitte LLP in the United States, where he has balanced building the business with growing talent through transactions such as acquiring the technology consulting firm BearingPoint's government operations, and investing in talent through initiatives like Deloitte University, a $300 million learning and development facility slated to open later this year in the United States.

Previously, Salzberg held the roles of U.S. managing partner, as well as managing partner of Deloitte LLP's tax practice, where he increased its market share and received numerous awards and citations. Salzberg joined Deloitte U.S. in 1977 and was admitted to the partnership in 1985.

Salzberg is a member of Deloitte's U.S. board of directors, the DTTL Executive Committee, and the DTTL Board of Directors. He earned a Bachelor's degree in accounting from Brooklyn College, a Juris Doctorate from Brooklyn Law School, and a Master of Laws degree in taxation from the New York University School of Law.
