SIU holds 20th annual 'Accounting Challenge'

Approximately 250 local high school students in Illinois recently participated in Southern Illinois University's 20th annual "Accounting Challenge" on Feb. 2, playing for college scholarships and other prizes.

Hosted by SIU's College of Business’ School of Accountancy, the challenge featured written quizzes to test students' accounting know-how. Students with the highest scores earned certificates and SIU scholarships, valued up to $500, if they choose to attend SIU as an accounting major.

Winners of the written quizzes were as follows:

High School Accounting I

  • 1st – Ian Gilchrist, Marion High School, 12th grade, $500.
  • 2nd – Sam Childers, Marion High School, 12th grade, $300.
  • 3rd– Grant Tanner, Pinckneyville High School, 10th grade; James Veller, Centralia High School, 10th grade; Jessica Davis, O’Fallon High School, 12th grade; $200.

High School Advanced Accounting

  • 1st – Coby Blaylock, O’Fallon High School, 11th grade, $500.
  • 2nd – Dawson McRoberts, Du Quoin High School, 12th grade; Jesse Strang, Marion High School, 11th grade; $300.
  • 3rd – Brett Hersant, O’Fallon High School, 12th grade, $200.

Students were also split up into teams to see how quickly they could construct and assemble various assignments. Cade Dibadj, a senior accounting major at SIU, and Andrew Huggins, a master’s of accountancy student at the university, were also on-site to serve as coordinators for the challenge.
