Software, services & supplies

Lose something?Seems like everywhere you turn, somebody is losing a laptop loaded with private client data. We here at New Products can sympathize. We are (quite rightly) not trusted with a company laptop, but if we were, we'd be sure to lose it almost instantly, which is where the new Remote Laptop Security feature of Essential Security Software's Essential Taceo V. 1.6 would come in handy.

Essential Taceo is an e-mail and document security rights management application that integrates with Microsoft Outlook and lets you apply encryption and rights management controls to outgoing messages - so that, for instance, the recipients can't forward or print them. The new Remote Laptop Security function takes this control a step further, so that those unlucky enough to lose a laptop can log on to their account from another computer and deny access to any documents that were secured with Taceo. It won't get the laptop back, but it will help make explaining the disaster to clients a little less awkward.

Stamps online

As advanced as we are as a civilization, we have still not managed to eradicate drug abuse, ethnic prejudice or the need to line up to buy postage stamps. One small victory in the last fight is the introduction of Dymo Stamps, which combines a small thermal printer with online software to print postage in your office for first class, priority mail, postcards and international airmail. The software is free, the printers don't need toner or ink, and there are no monthly postage fees or meter lease payments - you buy the labels and the postage as you need them, and print it all up yourself. By such small steps does mankind advance.

Until the ink dries

You can't promote your firm's brand enough, and yet your employees are curiously reluctant to have the firm logo tattooed in any of the obvious places. Until they overcome their foolish fears, you might try GBC's new line of Branded Notebooks, a line of spiral-bound notebooks with your brand art on them. The notebooks are just the latest of GBC's customizable products, which range from binders and presentation materials to CD-ROM and DVD packaging and more. All of which should help extend your brand awareness, at least until you can get your staff drunk and draw your logo on them in indelible ink.

Logo-go-go

On the off chance that any of your staff are willing to get tattoos of your logo, you'll want one that's pretty sharp. Actually, you'll want a sharp logo no matter what - but design and graphic services can be pretty expensive. For firms that don't want to spend a bundle on a graphic designer, customized print product supplier VistaPrint has created a logo design service that's free for business card customers.

VistaPrint's logo design tool leads you through a simple process to choose graphics, fonts and colors, and shows you a variety of options based on your preferences. You can use the logo for free on business cards ordered from the company, and for a small introductory fee, you can download a ZIP file of PDF and JPEG formats to use on Web sites and the like.

Price: Downloadable logo package - $19.99.
