CPA Lawrence Jay Stern, a founding partner of the Southern California firm NSBN LLP, died Oct. 14 at the age 72, after a battle with cancer.

The New Jersey native served as managing partner of the Beverly Hills, Calif., firm, formerly known as Nanas, Stern, Biers, Neinstein & Co., from 1965 until 2002.

Stern was a member of the American Institute of CPAs, the California Society of CPAs, the National Board of Directors of United Cerebral Palsy and a recipient of that group's Firestone Award. He was also the North American representative to the board of directors of Russell Bedford International, a network of accounting firms, business consultants and legal advisers, of which NSBN is a member.

On May 18, 2003, Beverly Hills recognized "Lawrence Stern Day in Beverly Hills," by proclamation of Mayor Levyn.

Stern was named Accountant Advocate of the Year by the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce, and was included in Who's Who in Century City by the Century City Chamber of Commerce, and in Who's Who in Accounting by the Los Angeles Business Journal.
