Street Sweepers Get More Respect than Accountants

London (June 14, 2002) – Street sweepers, pub owners and plumbers get more respect than accountants – at least in the United Kingdom, according to a recent poll.

The U.K. association of accountants conducted a poll for the BBC asking 6,000 people to list the three most respected professions and the three they respect the least.

Of the 92 professions mentioned in the survey, accountants came in close to the bottom – at 83, just ahead of company directors and car dealers.

Health and emergency workers dominated the top 10, with physicians leading the list. Street sweepers rated fairly high on the list, coming in at No. 25, while social workers earned a respectable No. 35, waitresses ordered up No. 42, pub owners bellied up to the No. 54 spot, and plumbers plunged somewhat to No. 71.
