Symantec Acquires IMlogic

Security software, appliance, and services provider Symantec Corp. has reached an agreement to acquire IMlogic Inc., a software developer for enterprise instant messaging headquartered in Waltham, Mass.

The acquisition is expected to close after receiving regulatory approval.

Symantec and IMlogic had partnered together prior to the acquisition in order to develop security tools for IM services against malware and spam threats. Symantec's Enterprise Vault, an e-mail and data archiving product, has been integrated with IMlogic's IM Manager, a message archiving solution, since 2002. The two companies also performed research on the growth of IM and peer-to-peer security levels over the Web.

"With the best-of-breed instant messaging management and compliance software from IMlogic, Symantec will be the first and only vendor to offer a complete security and archiving solution to help customers manage their messaging requirements," said Symantec senior vice president of security products and solutions Enrique Salem, in a statement.Following the acquisition, IMlogic's threat detection and remediation features will be integrated into Symantec's early warning and response system. Further integration between Enterprise Vault and IM Manager will soon follow.
