VSCPA honors 2021 Distinguished CPAs

The Virginia Society of CPAs announced the winners of the 2021 VSCPA Distinguished CPA Awards.

For the annual awards, VSCPA members nominate local CPAs for their accomplishments and their commitment to "service, diversity and innovation." This year's honorees will be formally recognized during the VSCPA Virtual Leaders’ Summit, held May 13, 2021.

This year's honorees include:

Outstanding Member Award: Alan Witt. The Outstanding Member Award recognizes a VSCPA member who has demonstrated notable service to the profession through VSCPA activities, civic engagement and charitable endeavors. Witt recently retired as CEO of PBMares in Newport News, 40 years after co-founding the firm. Witt is also an executive-in-residence at Christopher Newport University’s Luter School of Business, as well as the current chair of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

Ruth Coles Harris Advancing Diversity & Inclusion Award: Tyrone Dickerson. Sponsored by Keiter and Deloitte, the VSCPA Ruth Coles Harris Advancing Diversity & Inclusion Award recognizes a VSCPA member who champions diversity and inclusion in accounting to promote an inclusive workplace environment through policies, awareness and mentorship. Dickerson has owned his own firm in Richmond for 37 years and served as a member of the Virginia Board of Accountancy for eight years. In 2012, he chaired the diversity work group of the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy, and was tasked with increasing the diversity of NASBA’s leadership, culminating in the organization's diversity committee, which he also chaired.

The VSCPA Top 5 Under 35 Award recognizes emerging CPAs under the age of 35 who have contributed notable achievements on the state or chapter level. The 2021 Top 5 Under 35 recipients are:

  • Amanda DiStasio, Optimal Accounting, Suffolk
  • Victor Geagla, Baker Tilly, Tysons
  • Iris Laws, DHG, Richmond
  • Brad Lester, Brown Edwards, Roanoke.
  • Evan Wrinkle, WellsColeman, Richmond.
