AWSCPA Names Utah Prof as Educator of the Year

Marci Leigh Butterfield instructs – on average – 300 students each semester and is noted for knowing each of her students by name within the second week of class. This is just one of the reasons the University of Utah David Eccles School of Business assistant professor has been recognized by the American Woman’s Society of Certified Public Accountants Educator of the Year.

Since 1992, the award has been given to recognize excellence in teaching in the accounting field by a faculty member of a two or four year college. Nominations are collected from AWSCPA Chapters from around the country.

Butterfield has a unique story, as described in at www.utahpulse.com. At the age of 33, with five children and pregnant with the sixth, Butterfield enrolled in the accounting program at the University of Utah. Over five years she obtained her undergraduate degree in accounting and completed an MBA with an accounting focus.

Upon graduation, she went to work for Arthur Andersen where she acquired her CPA license. About a year and a half later, in 2003, she accepted a position to teach introductory accounting at the U of U.

When asked why she is an accounting instructor, Butterfield said there is nothing like being on a university campus and there is excitement and hope for the future.
