New York Students Experience World of Accounting

Approximately 100 Syracuse, N.Y. high school students turned out for the annual World of Accounting event to learn all about accounting.

Held at the SUNY Oswego Metro Center, the Syracuse chapter of the New York State Society of CPAs organized the March 2 event in cooperation with SUNY Oswego and Syracuse-based Partners for Education and Business Inc.

High school students heard CPAs practicing in public, government, and corporate accounting cover topics such as average salaries (which start at $38,000 for small public firms in the area), requirements for the CPA license and job opportunities investigating fraud, as well as, job opps in public and corporate accounting.

The Rochester chapter plans to host a similar program for high school students on May 14 at the HSBC Center in downtown Rochester. This event will feature an office tour of local CPA firms and more CPAs will offer their experiences in public, government and corporate accounting.

“Our agenda includes a very full program – including panels of CPAs and current accounting students, lunch and some special activities,” said Kenneth Hall, the Rochester event organizer.
