NYSSCPA volunteers assist Sandy victims

New York State Society of CPA members are providing pro bono services to small business owners affected by Superstorm Sandy over the next three months.

More than 100 NYSSCPA members have signed up to volunteer with New York City’s Department of Small Business Services and the New York City Economic Development Corporation to help small business owners with insurance claims, personal injury claims, measuring business interruption, economic damage calculations and business valuations.

The volunteers will also assist, across all five boroughs, with data collection, preparation and analysis for tax filings and payment issues, casualty-loss deductions, re-licensing and other general business questions.
“Service is at the core of our profession and a central tenet of our Society,” said NYSSCPA president Gail M. Kinsella in a statement. “I’m proud of members who are volunteering to connect business owners with resources and information to help them rebuild their livelihoods.”

The Business Solutions program is also expediting low-interest emergency loans of up to $25,000, in addition to supplemental grants funded by the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City of up to $10,000 for small business owners. Those in need of these loans should call their local NYC Business Solutions Center.
