Hourly earnings growth for employees at small businesses slowed this month to its lowest level since May 2021, according to Paychex.

Employment rose by a stronger than expected 228,000 jobs in March, although unemployment inched up to 4.2%, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported.

Private sector employment grew by 155,000 jobs in March as annual pay increased an average of 4.6% year to year, payroll provider ADP reported.

Private sector employers added 77,000 jobs in February, while annual pay grew 4.7% year over year, payroll processor ADP reported Wednesday.

Employers added 143,000 jobs last month, including 600 in accounting, tax preparation and payroll services, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported.

Annual pay rose 4.7% year over year for people who stayed in their jobs, according to ADP.

Job growth also slowed at small businesses in January, according to payroll company Paychex.

Annual pay grew 4.6% year over year as private sector employers added 122,000 jobs in December, payroll giant ADP reported.
