HMWC CPAs & Business Advisors’ annual “Death March” hiking adventure was completed with great success, as this year’s 37th annual event in the Grand Canyon, Arizona, was the setting for partners, employees, family, friends and clients of HMWC. The accounting firm, located in Tustin, encourages this type of team-building event to help with the firm’s goals of creating a work environment that fosters trust, initiative, loyalty, work/life balance and mutual employer/employee success. This annual event is held at different locations each year and involves an extensive, multi-day hiking and camping adventure in the wilderness. The 2015 edition of the event was attended by 19 firm members, family, clients and friends of HMWC, all of whom hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon for a two night stay at Phantom Ranch before hiking back out on July 13, 2015. Ages ranged from 16 to 72. The hike from the South Rim to Phantom Ranch on the Bright Angel Trail covered about 10 miles and a descent of over 4,300 feet. … TaxBuzz has launched TaxBuzz Verified, a background screening service for active accountants to help showcase their expertise and safeguard their reputation. Consumers are getting skittish about who they hire and our analytics shows that by adding reviews and a background check to a professionals profile, they reap more traffic. With hundreds of thousands of visitors, TaxBuzz is well on its way to establishing itself as the marketplace for tax accounting services.

FLORIDA

The International Accounting Group has admitted FGMK as its newest independent member firm. The addition of FGMK continues a significant growth trend for TIAG, resulting from its ongoing North American expansion strategy. … JumpStart Your Accounting Business, an online CPE training course, will start August 19, 2015 and run through September 17, 2015. This high-energy, fast-paced course is designed to help public accountants who are starting or re-starting their practice and need to attract more business rather quickly. MISSISSIPPI

The University of Southern Mississippi has joined the IDEA® Academic Partnership to provide students enrolled in the Master of Professional Accountancy program with experience using professional data analytics technology. The donated CaseWare IDEA software, valued at $77,000, will provide graduate students with a fully-functional Education Version of IDEA with the capability to analyze up to 5,000 records. Students have used the IDEA Workbook, case studies and data sets to learn how and where to apply data analytics through hands-on learning including importing data, performing various audit tests, reporting findings and automating repeatable processes.

VIRGINIA

Lerner Enterprises has announced that EY has signed a lease to be the first major tenant at 1775 Tysons Boulevard in The Corporate Office Centre at Tysons II in Tysons, Virginia. EY will relocate its Greater Washington office to a 125,000 square foot premises that will accommodate its current requirements and plans for future growth. … MS Consultants LLC, a company specializing in cost segregation studies and other innovative tax-saving ideas for real estate owners and developers, has opened an office in Virginia Beach. The new office, at 780 Lynnhaven Parkway, comes in response to MS Consultants’ rapid growth as the firm focuses on new opportunities along the East Coast to provide support for clients impacted by the new federal Tangible Property Regulations.
