The IRS Return Preparer Office plans to mail letters this week to approximately 5,000 preparers who are doing returns without valid PTINs.
Letters will be sent to preparers who are using legacy PTINs obtained prior to September 2010 and who never renewed in the new online PTIN system, those using Social Security numbers instead of PTINs and those using expired PTINs.

Anyone who prepares or assists in preparing federal tax returns for compensation must have a valid 2014 PTIN before preparing returns. All enrolled agents must also have a PTIN. Renewals for the 2015 filing season will begin in mid-October.
