Thomson Reuters Debuts Checkpoint Catalyst for Tax Research

Thomson Reuters has introduced Checkpoint Catalyst, the latest generation of its online tax research system.

The system features multi-jurisdictional tax content, embedded tools and an improved search engine, built on top of Thomson Reuters’ Checkpoint platform.

The older version of Checkpoint already delivers analysis, news and guidance on tax planning and compliance. Checkpoint users number in the hundreds of thousands of tax professionals, including 99 of the top 100 U.S. CPA firms, 96 of the Fortune 100, and 97 of the top 100 U.S. law firms, according to the company.

Thomson Reuters has now launched Checkpoint Catalyst after more than two years of development, customer input, and a multi-million dollar investment.

“Checkpoint Catalyst transforms the tax research process for complex tax issues and business-related transactions,” said Steve Mendelsohn, managing director of knowledge solutions for the Tax & Accounting business of Thomson Reuters, in a statement. “It provides research content in context, enabling our customers to move from insight to action swiftly and easily.”

The interface of Checkpoint Catalyst has been organized to allow users to view all the relevant content on a topic on a single page to save research steps and reduce the risk that something important could be missed. The content is accompanied by author commentary highlighting details that might pose a risk or an opportunity when managing a specific business issue.

The system is designed to support quick lookups as well as detailed research on specific types of tax knowledge. Catalyst fully integrates with all other existing Checkpoint content.

The search engine in both Catalyst and Checkpoint makes use of editorial insights and user behavior patterns to take practitioners to the most pertinent results.

The software comes with interactive tools, including diagrams, decision-trees, charts, calculators, and document assembly applications, guiding users to the answers and outcomes they need.

“When you use Checkpoint Catalyst to research a tax issue, you’ll have greater confidence that you’re getting a complete picture and that your research process has been thorough and comprehensive,” said Steve Zelman, senior vice president of product platforms for the Tax & Accounting business of Thomson Reuters. “It connects the dots between federal, state and U.S. international tax implications better than anything else on the market.”
