Rap Singer Beanie Sigel Charged with Tax Evasion

Prosecutors have charged rapper Beanie Sigel with three counts of failing to file federal income tax returns from 2003 to 2005, despite earning approximately $1.5 million.

The singer, whose real name is Dwight Grant, earned $388,698 in gross income in 2003, $296,673 in 2004, and $859,796 in 2005.

His attorney told the Associated Press that his client was in prison for some of those years and had others preparing his taxes. Sigel was in jail on drug and weapons charges and after he tested positive for drugs while on supervised release. The singer has reportedly sold over 2 million albums, including “The Truth, “The B Coming," “The Solution,” and "The Broad Street Bully." He founded the rap group and clothing line State Property.

His attorney told the Philadelphia Daily News that he is likely to plead guilty, but may contest the earnings claimed by prosecutors.
